Our family room has a huge brick hearth and had dark, ugly beams and trim work. Two walls had wallpaper which had been up for approx. 20 years. They took it off with ease, primed the entire room, including the hearth, and painted everything. They used all no VOC products because of our chemical sensitivities. The huge brick hearth is now a piece of art, literally.
