    What's special

395.5 +/- ACRE MICHIGAN WOODED RECREATIONAL PARCEL WITH FORD RIVER FRONTAGE FOR SALE! This property is located in Sagola Township, in north-western Dickinson County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When people think about Sagola Township, they think about the great logging era in the Upper Peninsula. In the 1840s to the 1900s, as the forests of the east were depleted, logging companies moved west into the Great Lakes area. Investors considered the Michigan forests might be a source of rapid wealth. Michigan became the Nation's leading lumber producer between 1869 and 1900 - and it's forests were cut down for farms and to produce lumber for buildings, ships, and mines. In early days logging companies built "camps" and brought in crews. Men used axes and long cross-cut saws, and did most of the cutting in the winter when it was easier for humans and horses to move the logs to water. After the spring melt, the logs were floated down rivers and across lakes to sawmills. The sawn lumber was loaded onto ships and carried to markets. Later on, special railroad lines were built to carry logs out of the forest to sawmills and mines. (The demand for Michigan Timber has high: Mining created a large demand for timber for mine props - The smelters for copper and iron burned about 30 acres of hardwood timber for fuel each day - And early automobiles used as much as 250 board feet in each car. That equals an eight foot log, 27 inches in diameter for each car to come off the assembly line! For this reason, Ford Motor Company once owned over a half-million acres of land in the U.P.) It is estimated that by 1897 over 160 billion board feet was logged from Michigan forests. If 160 billion board feet of logs were laid out in a pile four feet high and eight feet wide, it would go around the world about 50 times, or to the moon and back about five times! The value of all the harvested wood was greater than all the gold from California during the gold rush! The property being offered for sale is located just two+ miles north-east of one of the well known Logging Towns, called Sagola. This town was formed in about 1885 by five Chicago men who came to harvest timber in the area. It began as a railroad station and mill settlement. The town name "Sagole" was derived from an Indian word meaning "Welcome", used in greeting one another. Within years this railway side town grew to include a Lumber Company, Catholic Church, Post Office, Township Hall, General Store, two Hotels, Saloons, and Clubs. Today the town caters to Tourists, and continues to support the forestry industry - Near it is a mill owned by Louisiana-Pacific that makes oriented strand board. The surrounding forest lands near the highway still provide trees for the mill. The property being offered for sale has a rolling terrain, and mostly mature thinned hardwoods, with a mix of conifers. It has nearly a Half-Mile of 40 Foot-Wide frontage on the cold, clear waters of The Ford River... Continued In Addendum
