This house is available for at least two years while we leave Michigan for work (though you are welcome to rent for a shorter time period). This is a rare opportunity to rent in the beautiful residential neighborhood of Glencairn! Perfect for visiting professors, sabbaticals and new arrivals, Lansing and Okemos professionals or a family looking to rent before buying. We can leave it totally or partially furnished, or unfurnished -- whatever's easiest for you. IMPORTANT NOTE - this neighborhood (and thus our home) is zoned for a single family, not unrelated persons (sorry, students!). Our house is located in the center of the highly sought-after Glencairn neighborhood (a leafy, family-friendly neighborhood with highly-rated Glencairn Elementary School and nursery schools) and is walking distance to a renowned Public library, downtown East Lansing, farmers market, restaurants, pharmacies, Target and MSU campus. It's half block from Shaw Park and short walking distance to three other great parks. 2-minute walk to several bus lines. A short drive to several malls, department stores and other commercial centers. The house has been well maintained, recently repainted and tastefully updated with new lighting and hardware. In 2024, we had these installed: a 6-burner gas "Cafe" range (with replaceable center griddle (we use it every weekend for pancakes!), efficiency central AC, Heat and 50-gallon water heater. Master bath was also updated with a granite counter and new sinks, and bathtub jets for soothing bath. Ceiling fans in two bedrooms. The home was also recently reinsulated (ceiling, basement, pipes, floor joists, etc.) and even though we keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer, our gas/electricity bills are far lower than average homes! Huge and ample windows bring in an incredible amount of natural light during all seasons on both floors, and honeycomb blinds allow you to regulate the light and insulate from the cold. The elegant front terrace and back porch provide ideal spaces for relaxing outdoors and having gatherings with friends. Lovely fireplace with glass doors for cozy fires (and natural heat) year round. The BASEMENT includes a very large recreation space -- we use it as a combination game room (foosball, climbing space and toddler toys) - piano room, workout room (elliptical machine and recumbent exercise bike) and movie room. The futons (which fold down into beds) and bath allow us to use the basement to house additional guests. The other half of the basement has our laundry and dryer, extra fridge, utility sink, secondary pantry, extra storage, and a fully equipped workshop with HVAC/AC/Water heater units. It also has three tables set up for laundry folding, children's hobbies/crafting, as well as overflow cooking/baking . The large garage allows you to park 2 cars, and there's additional parking space on the driveway. Flexibility in rental terms. The house is available as early as November 2023, though a later start date (December or January) also works. 1-2 year leases are preferred, but we are willing to accept shorter timelines. It can come furnished or unfurnished - let us know what you prefer (we'll store whatever furniture you don't want). This home is incredible for how much space it has, inside and out, as well as all the natural light. (If you include the laundry room and workshop, the house is actually 3600 sq feet.) We may also be able to provide you with some additional storage space if you need. Rent does not include utilities (gas, electricity, water, internet) which runs roughly $300 month. We would rather you pay the utilities directly, though we can be flexible with that arrangement. A fun bit of house trivia: this is a historically important home, built in 1937 by MSU President Shaw, as a wedding present for his daughter, Sarah Shaw and her husband, John Hannah, who also went on to become MSU President. Shaw Park, Hannah Park and the Hannah Center (among other locations) are named for them. The home stands out for the incredibly high quality design, materials and workmanship. We're willing to be flexible on all of these items - let's talk it through! However, we're currently planning on having the renter take on utilities (internet, gas, electricity, water). Renter responsibilities will also include: (1) assuring sidewalks are cleared according to city code (in a timely manner, usually within 48 hours of snow) (2) lawn is kept trimmed (mowed at least once every 2 weeks in peak summer), (3) we (the homeowners) will maintain overall maintenance (gardening, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, etc.)
