In 1877, Jacob C. Shelly purchased land on Church Street & began building the present house c1879. The going rate for a bundle of wood shingles at the time was $1. Mr. Shelly owned the Berlin Steam Mill at the corner of Cedar and King Streets. He was in partnership with J.Y, Shantz, a well-known Berlin Entrepreneur of the time. Designed as a "Heritage" Home, this gracious 2-storey Italianate home is a "treasure" of its period. Built in 1879, the two-storey house and separate coach house are among only a few city buildings continuously for more than a century. The style of the house is modelled on one popular in the northern U.S. at the time. The lot is 236 feet deep and the well shaded lawn with the backyard is dominated by 90' Norway maple. The back wing of the house was removed in 1967 and was completely rebuilt using the original brick. The house is of double brick construction. All plumbing, heating and wiring were redone in 1967. In 1980 the house was completely insulated using foam in the basement and blown material in the attic. Throughout the house, all cupboard hardware, brass door knobs & bathroom fixtures are of the best quality. On entering, the hall has a stairway to the left and the living room is through an arch to the right. The long sound one-piece cherry banister is rare. The 11' ceilings on the main floor & 12' ceiling on the second floor give a gracious air to each room. All floors are original.
