855 Five Mile Drive is one of the last remaining original Tompkins county schoolhouses from the turn of the last century. Built in 1905, It was known as County School 3, and the house retains many of the beautiful features from the original school, including oak trim, glass windowed doors, and a real bell in the belfry that you can ring. It features 11 foot ceilings, and tall windows which admit a considerable amount of light, which reflect off of the original maple flooring ( which was recently refinished ). The house has been upgraded with considerable attention to weatherproofing, including wall and attic insulation, and replacement of nearly all of the windows with high efficiency double pane pella units. It is a very quiet, energy efficient and warm place. The house features a japanese Ofuro style tub, which is served by a continuous on demand water heater. But for water lovers, in the summer, the Cayuga inlet is another choice. It is mere steps away, and a secluded swim in the creek among the evening fireflies of july is not to be missed. If you enjoy hosting, the house features an enormous deck above a workshop. The surrounding property includes a wetlands to the north ( with peepers ), an industrial swingset, a fenced garden ( to keep the deer out!), mature peach trees, some edible grapes on the vine, and a large lawn.
