Heartwood is a cohousing community. Cohousing residents are consciously committed to living as a community. The physical design encourages both social contact and individual space. Private homes contain all the features of conventional homes, and Heartwood residents also have access to extensive common facilities such as open space, trails, a playground, greenhouse, workshop and a common house which has 2 guest rooms, a large kitchen and a workout room. Cohousing communities are old-fashioned neighborhoods created with a little ingenuity. They bring together the value of private homes with the benefits of more sustainable living. That means common facilities and good connections with neighbors. All in all, they stand as innovative answers to today's environmental and social problems. Heartwood, in particular, is about building connections with your neighbors and there are several ways that this is encouraged. One example is common meals. These are twice a week (Tues and Wed). Anyone can come to these meals with just a couple of days notice. If anyone is interested in the house, then we would encourage a visit to learn more about cohousing and meet some of the neighbors. Cohousing is about community and is more than just buying a house. From the Heartwood Website here is a list of the amenities that are shared. " 361 acres of forest and irrigated pasture. 4000 square foot common house with commercial-size kitchen, dining room, guest rooms, rec-room, exercise room, and more. 800 square foot yurt. Children s play structure, the S.S. Ponderosa. 800 square foot organic greenhouse and irrigated gardens. Tractor. Henhouse. Barn. (This is actually still on the drawing board, but hopefully soon.) 1000 square foot workshop. Hot tub. 3+ miles of trails with more being built every year. Tennis court. Basketball court. Play field. Skateboard park (2 quarter pipes). Community water wells, water system, and septic system. We enjoy an incredibly rich community life located on a beautiful piece of land for the same amount of money that we d spend to live on just a few isolated acres in the country or on a tiny lot in town."
