    What's special

Beautifully crafted 1920's home at the base of Paine Mountain for sale in Northfield, Vermont. The 3.25 acre wooded lot ascends up the mountain to an open meadow with apple trees and blackberry patches. A connection of mountain biking trails and incredible hiking discoveries of abandoned slate quarries awaits. Back country ski from your own backyard. This historic home is one of the only New England buildings designed by the famous architect, Edward Buehler Delk, who did most of his work in the midwest and southwest. The home was built for another famous man, Colonel Frank Tompkins, who was a great patron of Norwich University and the town of Northfield. Though built in 1920, the home has had only 3 owners and has kept its original beauty, including glass doorknobs, french doors, brass sconces, and built in bookshelves. There have been some modern updates including electric and plumbing, new roof, new boiler and oil tank, interior and exterior paint. The home has two Morso woodstoves at either end of the house which are used for heating. Another heating option is to use the oil boiler which warms cast iron water radiators. As for the layout of the house, there are 5 bedrooms with large closets (unique for this time period): a guest room with private bath downstairs, 3 bedrooms upstairs (one with private bath), and one master bedroom with bathroom and large study connected to a seasonal sunroom. In addition, there is a living room, dining room, breakfast nook, and mudroom. Hardwood floors are throughout the house, including the attic which is ready to be converted into additional living space (all sheetrock and materials are up there as is an old wooden box of Colonel Tompkins). On the ends of the house are a covered porch with Dutchman's Pipe vines climbing up pillars and a 2 vehicle carport on the other end. This is a fantastic home in town with the option of privacy out the back door or the warm Northfield community down the front steps (Norwich University is a ten minute walk).
