Below you will find the history as written by the owner of the property. This home is the only house still standing in Catesby, Oklahoma. Ebin and Ella Rose came from Buffalo New York to go before the U.S. Congress to open a Post Office in Indian Territory. They were granted permission and Ebin, Ella, & Flavis Rose traveled by covered wagon from Woodward over a dirt trail on open range until they found the place they wante to build their town. The town was nambed After Cateby A.P. Roger Jones. Catesby Jones was best remembered as the Confererate Lieutenant Executive Ordnance Officer that took command during the famous Duel of the Ironclads between the Monitor and the Merrimac in the Civil War of 1862. Ebin Rose was an artist and many of his paintings of Catesby and the wildlife still hang in area homes. The Rose famiy first built a so house, 40x20 just NW of the now standing Catesby house. This served as the first an only Post Office and General Store in the Catesby Base. Ebin, being of poor health, left most of the work to his son, Flavius. After Statehood, Flavius Rose applied for homestead at Ellis County Courthouse in Arnett, Oklahoma on May 13 1907. During the peak time of the Town's most active history, the Catesby Base stretched a 5 mile radius of the town of Catesby and was the home of 100 families. The Rose family built their first home in Catesby SW of the sod house. The house consisted of 4 rooms. In 1986 the NW bedroom was converted into a front receiving room. The living room was enhanced by a picture window with side windows that open for fresh country air at about the same time. The first four rooms were insulated with a blown insulation while the Johnson family owned the property. The Johnson family owned the property from 1929 to 1970. The old sod house across the road became unsafe for the mail and the present mud room of this house became the Mail room until 1970. The Swenn family was a part of the Catesby Base since the early 30's. Since birth, all Danny Swenn really knew was a life in Catesby. On Sunday, at the age of about 8 years old, Danny would ride his bike from the Swenn farm home, west of Catesby, to play horseshoes with Richard Johnson. On one of these outings, Danny, with a handshake agreement, asked to buy Catesby when the Johnson family was ready to sell. Richard Johnson laughed out loud and agreed to contact Danny when he was ready to sell. When Danny turned 21, he was the first one the Johnson's thought of when they decided to move to Shattuck. The sale was completed in 1970. Danny moved his new bride Anna to Catesby on their wedding day, April 30, 1970. At that time the original mail hutch and tables were still up in the Post Office part of the house. They were sold to an antique dealer in 1975 when the Swenn's applied for the adoption of a child. During the first 5 years of their marriage, Anna washed and sold eggs to the hospital in Shattuck in order to save enough money to have the east side, or the post office side, remodeled into a bedroom for their child, a bathroom and laundry room, and a large walk-in closet and large hallway. In 1979 their dream complete, they became parents to a
