Oh, the charm of 71 W. Rose Valley Road! This charming 3-bedroom Stone Mill house was transformed by William Price into a craftsman home after being built for the mill workers. Price founded Rose Valley in 1901, and at the time it was so infested with bandits and highwaymen, that it was called 'The Valley of the Rogues'. The Mill House Residences, a group of small managers' houses as well as a block of workers rowhouses of which 71 W Rose Valley is one, were located on the ridge adjacent to the Old Mill on Rose Valley Road. Built after the Civil War for the mill workers, Price and his associates transformed the Mill Houses. According to an unidentified article, probably written c.1904, they have been turned into quaint and picturesque little homes for the artisans and their families. The houses consisted of three twin houses on the south side of Rose Valley Road and a row block which had six units in a continuous row. The latter was the Price family's first place of residence in Rose Valley. 71 West Rose Valley has stood the test of time and now stands as a single-family twin home. Walk up the terraced front to the level front yard and stone entry and note the original stone. This has been lovingly repointed. Built with 18-inch solid stone walls, the features of 71 W Rose Valley Road include original interior mill work and hardware, rounded window casings, original windows (note the swirls in the hand-blown glass), unusually high ceilings, exposed beams, Pumpkin Pine floors, a small fireplace in the Living/Dining Room, an updated Kitchen with heated tile floor and door to the lovely courtyard with terraced stone gardens and steps up to each level. The Second Floor has 2 bedrooms and a large full bath. The Third Floor loft can be a 3rd bedroom or office. Functional and clean, the Basement includes laundry hookups. Knob & tube remediation in 2023. Updated or new utilities. The Borough of Rose Valley owns and maintains the parking lot across the street for you and your guests. And the sidewalk in front of the home will be improved as seen on the adjacent property. A stone's throw from the Saul Wildlife Sanctuary, Hedgerow Theater (the oldest repertory theater in the country), Media's renowned restaurants and shops, and both the Moylan-Rose Valley and the Wallingford train stations, this historic Artisan's Mill house offers the charm of yesteryear with the necessities of today. 2023-10-07
