As the community grows, local leaders, residents and businesses must work together to encourage appropriate market investments, while still preserving the unique qualities that make Bluffton special. Through proper planning, local development projects invest back into the community while celebrating the history, look, and spirit of the Town. In 2018, local developers submitted plans for the The Bridge mixed-use development, including three multi-use buildings on the corner of Calhoun and Bridge Streets adjacent to the Heyward House in historic Old Town Bluffton. 2 THE BRIDGE AT CALHOUN The Bridge at Calhoun will be home to 10,500 sq. ft. of office and retail space and 12 upscale multi-family units. The development plans call for three separate 2.5 story buildings to be partitioned into six retail space locations, twelve charming 2nd story residential units, a destination restaurant, and on-site parking situated outside of street view. In homage to the history of Old Town, the development integrates art as a key component to both its architecture and overall design, including murals throughout the space showcasing the work of local artists. Developers worked with the Bluffton Historic Preservation Commission and Town planners to ensure that design features accentuate a vibrant main street atmosphere in accordance with the Bluffton town master plan. The development has an open-air layout that allows patrons to easily flow through and between retail locations. To support the growth of local community enterprises, developers are partnering with local and regional community groups, Town and County governments, and development organizations to prioritize economic empowerment of minority and woman-owned business, culinary and visual arts, poetry, musical arts, and local, artisanal retail outlets. The Bridge development will highlight local initiatives that will foster long lasting partnerships between residents and businesses. Furthermore, it will celebrate and preserve Bluffton's unique culture while empowering the community to benefit from new economic opportunities.
