Something tamed, something wild": SHARED HOUSING FOR RENT for one person with me in my home in the fertile crescent valley between Arcata and Eureka: KEY POINTS: -$1,250.00/month, garbage, power, water, internet included -Security deposit: $900 -available AUGUST 1st, 2025, month-to-month, sublet -looking for someone long-term -Please tell me a little about yourself in your response -no dogs Finding a housemate is not as easy as posting an ad might imply. Absolutely, the financial responsibilities of being able to cover rent and bills apply first, but lifestyle plays an equal part as does camaraderie and compatibility. 'Do you keep a clean space' is as relevant a question as are inquires about how you share space, value community, and preserve privacy. 'Can you afford it' becomes a question that reaches beyond the financial to include the social: sharing a space means more than paying the bills. Finding housing in this region is a blessed nightmare too, and for those in the market my heart goes out to you. I know it isn't easy: rental agencies want access to your bank accounts; rentors want you to earn three times the rent monthly, require a lengthy rental history reaching back years, and more often than not also require a deposit with your application to even be considered. Potential roommates are, at best, a crap-shoot; moving in with strangers is always a gamble. I desperately wish there was an incantation I could memorize that would course-correct the bewitching housing crisis that affects our region and communities here so that you-the seeker, and everyone else seeking- could more easily find your home here. Alas, I cannot. Not for everyone, at least. But for the right person, I have for offer the following: Available on August 1st, the upstairs portion of my house, which includes a private stairwell entry and private porch, a common room of your own with two private bedrooms of your own (total, about 600 sq. ft), as well as communal space downstairs including a large living room and spacious kitchen, 1 and 1/2 baths, laundry, and an expansive front and back yard, as well on-site parking: Something tame, something wild. The backyard borders alpacas who frequent my yard for feeding on the tall grass, commonly thrice a week. The forest all but pours into our small valley that I share with five other homes on the dirt road we live on. We neighbors have been friends for years. Expect some rogue ducks and chickens and several neighbor cats who roam freely across the meridians of our yards. Neighbors are kind and social without being nosy. Frogs and raptors live here, and the fields that surround us are in a tense dance of being cultivated and remaining wild. Farmers occupy the acreage to the north, west, and immediate south. An apothecary is within waltzing distance in case you need duck eggs or freshly baked bread. Everything and everyone in our small ecological 'hood move with the slight parlance of unhurried breath. On Thursdays, bluegrass can be heard being plucked but a small parlance from my backyard fire pit, where my neighbors gather around their own to pluck quietly in the evening air. Time moves differently and slower here. Here, you would also be never further than a six minute's unhurried drive to either Eureka or Arcata, where the likely need for commerce and work are closer than it feels. If you need a quick grocery item, there are two small markets each less than a mile away to the north and the south, and you will quickly make friends with the merchants and call them by their first name, as they will quickly do with you. Don't get too excited: like most of the architecture in this small universe we live within between the two central county towns, my house was built in the late 19th century, and comes less equipped with the finer trappings of 21st living. Yes, there is heat, but it isn't central, nor is the house well insulated. Living here means discovering you have a favorite house-sweater that you wear in the winter months. There is a gas fireplace that warms the common areas and offers a homey and fiery glow, but at a price for the gas it consumes, and the heat does not reach the extremities of the house. In this regard, you will want to be hardier than those in the city are. The house is channeled with exceptionally clean well water, and internet is available with a very strong signal. As for myself, I am an active 52 year old male who busies himself professionally as a builder. I have a four year old daughter that lives out of state, but visits for the summer and the common breaks from school during the rest of the year. I proudly keep a tidy and artsy household and otherwise enjoy the quietude the environs here provide in the evening and on the weekends. I enjoy the quiet rapture that living and caring for a house and land here provide, and have a few friends that visit in the early evenings on occasion. And you, fair seeker of a secure living situation? If you held on this long through paragraphs of wander and are still reading, did the aggregate of my post draw interest and favorable curiosity? If so, I am happy to meet you. I have not the urgency to rent out my space to the first inquiry (unless of course we connect that quickly) and am inspired by a natural acquaintance and opportunity to meet the right person and explore the fit before we commit. Ultimately, I am looking for someone financially secure and at a point in their life where what is offered here resonates. Thank you for your time and interest. This is shared housing with one other person (myself; my four year old daughter lives out of state, but DOES stay with me for the summer and for holiday breaks from school). It is a month-to-month sublet, with all bills included in rent. Tennant is expected to help maintain common areas (kitchen, living room, bathroom, and yard) as would be reasonably expected in a shared housing situation, and will be expected to pay rent on time by the 5th of each month to me directly. This is a non-smoking house. I am a quiet and friendly gentleman who enjoys quiet evenings at home when I am not at work. I am looking for a housemate who ideally has a similar lifestyle.
