    What's special

The front lawn of this totally renovated & expanded handsome stone and clapboard Dutch Colonial in Harrods Creek, near Prospect, could've easily been what inspired William Wordsworth to pen his famous poem, Daffodils! Built in 1931 and named ''Somerset'', it includes 3.76 acres (total of 4 lots) located near the intersection of Wolf Pen Branch and River Road, one of Louisville's most sought after areas. Privacy is just out of this world even though you are within minutes of amazing restaurants, shopping, and more! In 2009, ''Somerset'' underwent a complete professional renovation by Louisville architect Doug Schmitt. The kitchen features custom white cabinets, Carrera marble countertops, an island with a mahogany countertop, state-of-the-art appliances, and hardwood floors. Then in 2019, the third floor and basement were remodeled by the current owners. The massive great room measures 13.3' x 36.3'with 9' ceilings and has hardwood floors and a wood-burning fireplace with a spectacular antique marble mantle that was imported from Italy in the 1950s...... the third-floor remodel is just spectacular...consisting of a bonus room (which these current owners use as their 4th bedroom) and fabulous full bath! (Current septic tank restrictions do not allow this "bonus" room to be called the 4th bedroom.) The basement remodel created an entertainment space perfect for children and movie nights, as well as a beautiful laundry room and half bath. Whole house generator comes on automatically if/when power fails. The rolling lawn includes many perennials, a play space, a two-car garage, and incomparable sunset views over the Ohio River. And there's more for you history buffs: The Taylor/Chandler House is one of the Country Estates of Historic River Road. The Dutch Colonial Revival was completed in 1931 by James Taylor, a notable African American builder and founder of the Harrods Creek neighborhood. Located up the hill from Merriwether House in "The Neck" of Harrods Creek, "Somerset" was briefly owned by Retired British Brigadier General Arnold Nugent Strode-Jackson, the first director of the Kentucky Derby Festival, who called it Strode Lodge. The home was then sold by the Strinauer family to a W.L. Lyons executive named James Chandler and his wife, Lelia Roemele Chandler, and dubbed "Somerset". Lelia curated the entire property into a series of terraced hillside gardens, some of which survive to this day, notably dominated by yellow and white daffodils across the property.
