Welcome to Waycross & 605 Elizabeth Street. The former U S Post Office & Court House is quite a facility. It starts with a basement of concrete & steel. It was built in 1911 as a post office and the court house & Judges chambers were added in 1935. Another interesting factor is the timing of the huge addition to the Post Office. This was one of the signature projects under Franklin D. Roosevelt's WPA program to put people back to work after the great depression. These projects were designed to create jobs & there were no budget constraints on design & materials. The result is an overbuilt timeless classic that would be virtually impossible to duplicate today with less than twenty million dollars. It served as the Post Office until the 1970's when it went into private hands & was used as corporate offices. The building has just undergone further renovations including drying out the basement & remedying that problem, adding new 1000 AMP service to the building and generally improving the property to its current state. New HVAC work has been done as well as other items that are on-going. The main level contained the post office and private offices. It is now a large room with hardwood floors with 16 foot ceilings. There are several vaults in the building and several are on this floor. We can imagine it as a Railroad Museum or as a Mayo Annex & offices...The main hall of the former federal building are of terrazzo with marble trim. All of the exposed wood in the building is oak with shining brass postal plates. Much of the history of the building has been preserved even with the renovations. There is a loading dock on this level from previous postal days. The current owner will install an elevator and continues to improve the property. As you head up the stairs to the ballroom or Judges former courtroom you are greeted again by terrazzo floors, marble trim & the solid oak doors. The ballroom has period light fixtures and his honors bench is still there. The current owners will lease out the floor and facilities for social occasions.
