Although this house looks like a miraculous extension of the wooded hill beneath which it hides, it was only in 2003 when Henry Johnson, renowned architectural interior designer, completed construction on his personal home, a single-level masterpiece amongst a collection of gardens and courtyards. The Fieldhouse. Two sculpted piles of carefully stacked stone form a gateway as a bluestone approach spreads beneath a canopy of the same mature trees that keep this house secret. This entry arbor opens into a forecourt and the bluestone continues up to the front steps where a handcrafted, 200-year-old door opens into the modern elegance of minimalist architecture and the warmth of its creator’s character. Three steps into the house, standing in the Library Foyer, beside the impeccable grid of a floor-to-ceiling bookcases running the full length of the entry hall, one finds themselves at the crux of an “L’d” intersection; to the right: the living space, straight ahead: the sleeping quarters. The living space. A wall of windows, five pieces of plate glass 78” x 60” lead to a living room unlike any other in Baltimore. Centered on the East wall, a fireplace sits upon a French limestone hearth that spans the width of the room, impossibly hovering above the hardwood floors (a mixture of 300-year-old English Oak and Chestnut). The lush and layered garden view, the perfect proportions and the flawless execution of masterful design, have distracted from the fact that one is also standing in the kitchen. The sink and the cooktop practically vanish into the limestone countertops, the discrete and paneled appliances are hidden in plain sight. Beyond the kitchen, two corridors of 9’ panels hide ample storage: pantries, laundry, closet space, and a half bath. True to the minimalist simplicity, there are no visible hinges or hardware throughout the house. The sleeping quarters. From the Library Hall, one finds the suite: a bedroom that opens onto another private courtyard, a dressing room, from which a rear porch enjoys overgrown seclusion, and a full bathroom with the perfect simplicity of a walk-in shower beneath an illuminated ceiling while the tiled geometry becomes infinite within the mirror. Within the “L” of the primary house, a patio of 19th century marble sits beneath a vast trellis of English ivy and trumpet vine, this is a space for morning coffee and dinner parties, the quiet gathering of a few or the crowded collection of many. Beyond the trellis is the Sundial Garden, another chamber in this campus of gardens; just down the path, the true surprise is found… The log cabin. Built in 1743 in Charleston, South Carolina, the cabin was disassembled and trucked up to Baltimore where it was reconstructed upon a new foundation and the modern conveniences of air conditioning and running water were added. Through the front door, the modernity of the primary house finds perfect balance with this nearly 300-year-old structure. A living room opens on to a screened porch, a modest, and appropriately rustic bathroom has been retrofitted beneath the stairs that lead to the 2nd floor bedroom above. The cabin’s possibilities are endless: office, guest house, additional living space, or simply a second bedroom. The Field House enjoys convenient access to Lake Avenue, Northern Parkway and Falls Road. NOTE: Of the listed rooms, The Den, 2nd Bedroom and 2nd Full Bath are IN THE CABIN. The square footage might not reflect the cabin. Buyer to verify square footage
