Glen Echo is a small town on the edge of Bethesda and the C&O Canal, adjacent to the Glen Echo Park, founded as a Chautauqua, or center of learning, in 1889. There are currently 221 residents, with a town mayor and two city council officials. The adjacent Glen Echo Park used to function as an amusement park until 1969, but is now a National Park Service property containing a playground, carousel, children's theater and discovery center, ballroom, art showrooms, and multiple yurts in which calligraphy, painting, photography, and pottery classes are held.
