Girdletree is a village 5 miles east of the county seat of Snow Hill, about 1/2-way between Ocean City, MD, and Chincoteague/Assateague/Wallops Island, VA. We enjoy the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and Assawoman Bay. Within walking/biking distance, we enjoy the fishing, crabbing, and clamming of Chincoteague Bay. It is 10 minutes from Pocomoke River State Park, which has camping, fishing, boating, and swimming pools. One of the favorite local pastimes is Pony Penning on the last Wednesday of July--the basis of Margaret Mitchell's book, Misty of Chincoteague--when local firemen herd the wild ponies from the southern part of Assateague Island across the Atlantic to Chincoteague, where they are auctioned the next day. The schools of Worcester County are rated as the best in Maryland, with all Snow Hill schools having received the Blue Ribbon of Excellence. Worcester Technical High School, located in Newark, was built as state-of-the-art in 2010 and offers a plethora of programs to prepare local students for both college and careers. People in Girdletree are friendly and casual. They help their neighbors in any way possible. Few homes sell each year because residents tend to stay settled here.
