This beautiful 3,500 sq ft East side home off Acequia Madre is a dream, with coved ceilings between the vigas, adobe, and lots of Santa Fe charm.
Walk in the front door into a two story foyer that looks into the living room. To your left is a kitchen we just built 3 years ago, A breakfast nook off the kitchen brings the sunlight in and offers a way to watch the kids while cooking at the island, Nice stereo speakers in the kitchen and living room offer sound at the touch of a button. Kitchen is fully stocked -we like to cook.
To your right off the foyer is a staircase that leads up to an open master bedroom. A deck off the bedroom brings in the sun. A small library sits in front of the raised bedroom, off of which are two separate bathrooms - one with an enclosed shower, the other with a jetted tub and toilet, both with walk-in closets.
Step from the library down a short open hall to the second upstairs bedroom - or access it from a fairytale spiral staircase off the kitchen. This bedroom has hand-made adobe walls and a windowseat overlooking a view of the backyard. It has a bunkbed which can also be set up as a twin.
The downstairs bedroom sits just off the kitchen at the bottom of the spiral stairs. I use as an office but it has a queen bed we can leave in or take out, and also a hand-painted sky ceiling and views into the backyard.
There is a working fireplace in the living room and lots of firewood for snowy Santa Fe evenings in the winter. Downstairs has one full bath and one half bath, upstairs has a full bath with jetted tub, and a separate shower room, each has their own sink, vanity, and very large/nearly walk-in closets.
Outside is a delight. Our front gated yard has a large rock fountain offering the sound of falling water and a beautiful chokecherry tree. The large backyard has a hot tub, a swingset and sandbox for the kids, and a picnic table, and grill. The air is full of birdsong and large trees offer shade in the summer. Perennial plantings - roses, lilacs, hyacinths, tulips, irises and more offer plums, blossoms, and beauty from March through November. Irrigation takes care of most of the gardening work. Off the master bedroom is a two level deck with lounge chairs facing the private, fenced backyard, or views of the whole city.
This is the oldest, most historic part of Santa Fe, and a walk down the street leads you to historic homes, family chapels, and within five minutes, to Canyon Road, chock full of art galleries and some of the nicest restaurants in tow. The Teahouse, one of the best brunch spots in Santa Fe, Geronimos, and the Compound are within a ten minutes walk. A large park with playground, basketball court, and huge grassy field is also within ten minutes, as is a second park where people like to walk their dogs. You can walk to the plaza in half an hour or drive there in 6 minutes.
We are around the corner from Prep, and Rio Grande School and St. John's College are a five minute drive away. The public elementary school, Acequia Madre, is one of the best in the city. The Audobon Center with beautiful trails and birds is a ten minute drive (or beautiful bike ride), so are the Dale Ball Trails and a huge trail system that you can access by bike or a short car ride.
There is ample outdoor parking in a parking area just in front of the house. The home will be fully furnished and we can discuss what kids' items are needed if any - our things will be kept in the closed garage out of your way.
I work on issues of democracy and the rule of law at an international think tank based in DC, my husband is a sculptor with galleries around the world and Santa Fe.
We will be renting our home from mid-August through mid-July, with some flexibility around both dates, while we take a year's sabbatical. Utilities are in addition to rent - they run around $500 a month depending on water usage and so on. All of our personal items will be stored in the garage, so there is no enclosed garage; there is plenty of parking off road in the parking area in front of the home. We love animals but prefer not to have them. No smoking of any kind inside. A property manager who specializes in the maintenance of historic homes lives in the casita, which is connected to the home; he will take care of most maintenance and watering the garden. Tenants will be responsible for the houseplants inside the home.
