My husband and I have owned this home in Mechanicsburg for 20 years. For 12 years now, since our children have grown and moved to other states, we have spent part of the year at our river cottage and rented this home as a vacation rental, advertising on VRBO and Airbnb.

This vacation home has lots of room to increase revenue. As you may have heard, vacation home rentals have increased dramatically, and rental prices have increased on average 21% in the last year. We have not increased our base rate in four years. Over the years, we have rented the house by the week in the summer, our prime season, and have allowed shorter stays, usually 3 nights or more, in the spring and fall, plus holidays. We have discovered that there is a lot of potential for winter rentals as well, especially with Ski Roundtop so nearby. We haven’t tapped the full potential of winter season yet because we lived in the house ourselves for much of the winter for a change from our Susquehanna riverfront cottage in Dauphin where we live in the summer months. Nor have we marketed for longer stays of a month or more for business travelers or those who now work remotely.
