HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY
This is a historic property constructed circa 1811/12, served as the general store for more than 100 years. Various store keepers ran the store. Among them J& C Williams in 1817; Amos Corson in 1833; John McKinley the abolitionist in the 1840s (rumours persist that there was a underground railroad tunnel connecting this store to the Inn across the street); James Dauman in the 1850s; John Temple owned it for 38 years. He wrote the history of Lionville in 1927.
The post office was located in this building during Republican administrations and in the ?Lower? Store south side of Village Ave during Democratic administrations. John Temple was the longest serving postmaster.
A meeting was held in John Temple?s store on Feb 2, 1911 to create the first Volunteer Fire Company.
The Odd Fellows (odd because they helped those in need) rented the third floor before building their hall in 1895 (now the Barley Sheaf Players).
This building housed at various times, a tailor shop, a watchmakers shop, women?s millinery, a restaurant, the post office, barber shop and residence.
The Village was called Red Lion for most of the eighteenth century (named after The Red Lion Inn, built in 1728, across the street where Whitford and Village intersect). In 1826, it was renamed Lionville.
Must have good to great credit (score above 700) and no criminal background to live in this location.
