McCullough House, built by Revolutionary War veteran William McCullough, sits on a rise above the Musconetcong River, and was built in 1784. McCullough owned much of the local land, and owned a tavern after which the local town of Washington is named. After McCullough, a prominent Methodist publisher, Thomas McElrath, owned the house. He was partners with Horace Greeley, who is noted for the quote "Go West, Young Man." Subsequently, the house was a girl's finishing school and a nursing home.
