    What's special

Not often does an opportunity present itself to purchase a small piece of Montana History! Train enthusiasts will greatly appreciate the history of this building, along with the architectural design that comes with Substation No. 8 located in Gold Creek, MT. The Gold Creek Substation was one of 13 Montana substations that stood sentinel next to the Milwaukee Road Railroad, between Harlowton and St. Paul Pass on the Idaho border. Built between 1900-1915, the Gold Creek Substation reflects the Milwaukee Road's standard architectural design for this type of building. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad built 22 substations to power it's 654 route miles of electrified lines in Montana, Idaho and Washington. No 8 is one of the few still standing and in great condition. It is currently used to house a heavy equipment excavating business. The building was originally constructed with 16-inch brick walls, concrete roof and is approximately 5,592 square feet. The substation has 4 wood stoves that heat the building, a full bathroom and a front office which was originally the location for the remote substation control panel, which was controlled by the operator. To the east of the building is a newly constructed, attached woodshed that was added for firewood storage. The property also offers a very nice 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom residence with a 2 car garage. The home offers 1,578 square feet of living space and has 728 square feet in the garage. There is a second location on the property for a modular home/second residence, which has 200 amp service. The property has 2 wells, one hand dug which provides irrigation for the property and a second well for the residence and substation. There is also a finished, 153 square foot shed with a full root cellar. This all situated nicely on the 7.935 acre, partially fenced parcel, which is conveniently located near the Gold Creek takeout which provides access to the Clark Fork River. This is an absolute one-of-a-kind, amazing property! 2021-10-12
