Nestled in the Monongahela River Valley, 30 minutes north of Morgantown, WVa, this beautiful 1823 Shaker-built former church sits in a quiet village packed with history and amenities. The church features gorgeous woodwork, high ceilings, beautiful hardwood floors, a basement kitchen and common space, two half bathrooms ready for makeover, stain glass windows, pews and antique choir chairs. Although the church is not registered, the borough is designated a historic district. A grant provided funds for incredible amenities for such a small village of less than 300 residents. They include: a throwback Happy Days-like rollerskating rink, riverview park with playground sets and picnicking areas, little league ballfields, huge swimming pool with swim lanes-slide-splash park-kiddie pool, and a paved bike path. The village also offers a nearby boat and kayak launch, the historic Ice Plant Restaurant, and an old timey bookstore. The church grounds include a graveyard where many of the borough's historic notables were buried before 1857. These include three of the four founders of the first pottery factory (search: Greensboro Pottery) west of the Monongahela River and others connected to the Revolutionary War. In fact, one gravesite is marked with a Revolutionary War soldier marker. The church also features a natural gas furnace, hot water heater, and two half baths. Perhaps best is the proximity of Monongahela River and the PA FIsh & Boat launch which provides access to 11 miles of calm, underutilized riverway between two federal locks and dams. Take your kayak or boat through the locks to access other areas upriver to Pittsburgh and downriver to Morgantown. Or just enjoy the old industrial structures and natural beauty of this stretch of serene river. Watch for bald eagles, beaver, and bass flying up to catch a fly.
