This historic 1906 Craftsman house was fully renovated in 2006-2007. We kept the original 1906 charm but modernized all systems for safety, comfort, grace, and security. For our efforts, I'm proud to say that, the house was a 2022 winner of the Oakland Heritage Alliance "Partners in Preservation" award. Leighton Street is a 100 foot long street, a cul-de-sac, with no through traffic. It's a great little street, hidden in plain sight. The houses in this charming, old Oakland neighborhood are rather close together, so, as much as we love the arts, in respect of the neighbors, it would be best to hold rehearsals for your rock band, opera singing, or tap dancing elsewhere. :-) We have a nice little neighborhood/community thing going here on Leighton Street. The neighbors are quiet, nice, interesting professionals. This is city living at it's best. We are close to everything! :: PIEDMONT AVENUE :: THE NEIGHBORHOOD :: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION :: 150 paces to Piedmont Avenue with all its services: groceries, post office, banks, drug store, library, movie theater, cafes, restaurants, yoga studios, medical offices, book stores, gift shops, pubs, ice cream parlors. Voted one of the best streets in the east bay. 600 paces to Kaiser Permanente Hospital 2 blocks to the "Casual Carpool" stop to San Francisco on Harrison Street. 3 blocks to the freeway on-ramp (highways 580, 980, 880, 80, 24) 0.7 miles to the MacArthur BART station 3.6 miles to the U.C. Berkeley campus (Sather Gate) (Go Bears!). "Walkability Score" of 94 "Bike Score" of 75 "Transit Score" of 62 Local farmer's markets abound :: A TOUR of the HOUSE Room by Room :: STAIRWAY AS ENTRYWAY An oak door welcomes you and leads you up the carpeted stairs. Big cottage windows catch the first light of day at the landing with a stairway "tree-shelf" perfect for that large houseplant. LIVING DINING ROOM At the top of the stairs you are in the living/dining room with its oak floors, recessed light, picture and plate rails. Indirect light from 4 directions all day long. KITCHEN A small galley kitchen sits at one end of the living room. Morning light. Dishwasher, double sinks, gas stove, fridge, real linoleum floor (not vinyl!), oak cabinets, oak counter top. Kitchen door opens onto large, sunny (morning and afternoon light) Redwood deck. LARGER (Front) BEDROOM Sometimes used as an office or living room Walk through the single-pane French doors to the front bedroom. It has oak floors, picture and plate rails, 2 closets (1 walk-in, 1 under-eaves), with windows that look out the front of the house. Afternoon light. SMALLER (Back) BEDROOM Oak floors, picture rails, 1 large closet, narrow floor-to-ceiling built-in book shelf, recessed lights, original French door opens to large, sunny redwood deck. Morning light. BATHROOM Turkish marble floor, original wainscoting, oak cabinet, HUGE tub-for-two with a large shower head and subway tile with green glass mosaic inset, natural light from mini-skylight and window, quiet fan, low-flow toilet. Great water pressure and endless hot water (from an on-demand hot water heater) (but please, conserve water). BACK DECK Sunny, private, large wooden deck off kitchen and back bedroom, perfect for morning coffee, warm-weather entertaining, and warm-weather starlight sleeping. Direct sunlight from morning to afternoon, year round. WASHER - DRYER - LAUNDRY Complimentary washer/gas dryer is "on site" in a rough, outdoor, low-overhead, below-deck overhang in the back yard. It is not in the unit. YARDS I reserve the yards for the old dogs I care for. The eclectic, cottage gardens are casually, not formally, maintained. Sometimes between seasons, plantings, or projects they can look a bit scruffy. There are motion sensor lights for safety and security. The yard is home to plums (ripe ~ June 21), figs (ripe ~ September 15), two lemon trees, jasmine, roses, iris, lavender, rosemary, salvia, calla lilies, nasturtiums, agapanthus, spring bulbs, 20 yr old oak tree, a few Oakland native plants, squirrels, California salamanders, occasional raccoons and opossum, one palm tree, and the landlord's garden cottages, among other things. AND CRICKETS in (July), August, September, (October) YOUR DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBORS I am your downstairs neighbor, your landlord. I have a business in my home caring for senior dogs, a few at a time. You may meet various old dogs as you come and go through the yards. I'm a semi-retired, creative, green-business artisan/entrepreneur and have been an environmental philosopher. I often have projects going on in the yards. Surprisingly, our paths probably won't cross that much. Additional downstairs neighbors include one mostly-indoor cat, and one "garden cat" who roams the yards. :: THE END :: :: TERMS :: Year lease, but please stay longer. :-) :: YOU MUST LOVE DOGS :: I, the downstairs landlord, have a business caring for senior dogs, a few at a time. You may meet various old dogs as you come and go. :: PETS :: Pet friendly property Pets are welcome at no additional cost but are negotiable and subject to interview. Dogs, please be current with your license, shots, and flea/tick control and be ready to demonstrate your politeness and obedience to your humans (in exchange for treats, of course!) Also, you must play well with others.
