For over 120 years the YWCA has provided vital community services throughout the borough. From women’s suffrage to the civil rights movement, the YWCA of Brooklyn has been a pioneer for justice. Opened in 1888, the organization built housing for poor, single women; founded the first nursing school; was the first to racially integrate in the nation; and was at the forefront of the women’s movement. We are proud of the completion of over 300 units of affordable housing for low-income and homeless women, and a new community center which is now home to numerous non-profits serving the borough through girl’s leadership, domestic violence prevention and women’s health programs – a collaboration designed to strengthen services and build community.
