    What's special

In this one-of-a-kind home two historic structures, a hewn log barn from the mid-west and a cabin from Tennessee, are connected by breezeway with floor-to-ceiling glass. To the left an antique post and beam structure houses a great room, kitchen and dining room. The Great Room has a 26-ft vaulted ceiling and massive stone fireplace. The county kitchen has a hot-coal bread baking oven. To the right of the breezeway is the cabin with master bedrooms on the main level (with gas log fireplace) and the upper (a vaulted ceiling). Also up is a loft which sleeps four. Downstairs, a bedroom and bath plus a large partially finished space that is currently a workshop. This Mountain Retreat features hand hewn timbers from the virgin forests of America's past combined with the artwork of Martha Coursey, a contemporary mosaic and tile artisan. American history is revealed as you walk into each of the two structures built in the 1800s during the pioneer days of westward expansion. The hand-hewn barn was found near a 1790s trading post. It reveals the spirit of 1800s pioneers who traversed the Cumberland Road through Tennessee to settle the new Indiana territory. The Tennessee cabin from the early 1800s was hewn from virgin old-growth poplar and oak. Combining and adapting these antique buildings was accomplished by the prestigious historical specialist Allen Halcomb, AIA, and Moss Creek Designs. Mountain Retreat was built with relaxing, low maintenance and artistic integrity in mind. Open spaces and cozy nooks clustered around five fireplaces offer both figurative and literal warmth. Tile and mosaic patterns, wood and clay textures and iron art by master blacksmiths intrigue the eye in every direction. Concrete roof tiles, barn wood and hewn logs mean no exterior maintenance, ever. Lake Toxaway Estates is a premier mountain lake community in western North Carolina featuring the state's largest private lake, Lake Toxaway.
