SCHOOL SYSTEM We have three young children and have gone through Elementary and Middle schools here in Brodheadsville. Our children have run the gamut of programs within the schools so I feel that I can comment. Our oldest was identified as possible gifted in the second grade. We did not allow him to undergo the testing till third grade as we felt it was a little early for him. He however did pass and entered the Gifted program. My experience with this program is that it the curriculum is formed around the student and their accelerated capabilities. They are nurtured and challenged to think differently. The teachers involved are always accessible, and progress reports occur throughout the school year. Another plus is that they are not taken out of their regular classes, so they can continue to make friends and not feel different. Our second child, was also identified as gifted early on. He did not pass the test, but continues to excel at his studies. His teachers however, offer him with more challenging work to compensate. Chestnut Hill Elementary also had begun to institute many after school programs that he was interested in, that challenged him in different ways. Our third child was identified as a summer baby. My wife and I had no idea what that meant, but we began to see that since he was younger than most of the kids in his grade (born in late summer), his maturity level was a little behind. Chestnut Hill immediately placed him in after school programs that focused on reading and math on a one to one basis with an amazingly patient teacher. She was a loved member of his life, that is how great she was. The results were startling, as over the course of the school year, he went from last in reading to the top group in his class. Mathematic comprehension was also noticeable. We will always appreciate the care and attention given all of our children within this school district.
