Located on the NE corner of McCauley Street and Ransom Street, this first-floor apartment is on the east side of a two-story red brick building built in 1926. There are only three remaining historic buildings near campus originally designed for 1-bedroom apartments, and this is one of them. The apartment has NINE windows! It has a nice, quiet separate bedroom (w/ 2 east-facing & 1 north-facing double-pane windows, & 2 closets, one of which is cedar lined), a large living room (w/ 3 south-facing windows), kitchen (w/ 2 east-facing windows), full bath (& an east-facing window), a study carrel under a flight of stairs, and a long interior hallway suitable for a bookcase. Interior doors are original five-panel (with original glass door handles), and there is picture railing in the living room, the bedroom, and the interior hallway. The apartment gets lots of light, with its many windows facing south, east and north. Just outside the front door is a nice-sized porch that is one of the best people-watching locations in town! The apartment has its original 1 " oak floors, a type considered relatively rare due both to the special nature of the milling done to the wood, as well as to the extra labor required to install such narrow flooring. Interior "gross living area" has been appraised at 792 square feet, but actual square footage is probably less. The kitchen has a relatively new refrigerator, large sink, electric range, Bosch dishwasher, under-cabinet lighting, and granite countertops. The two east-facing kitchen windows provide pleasant light. A clothes washer and a dryer are conveniently sited in the rear "mud room" entrance hallway. There are only four apartments in the building, all rented to graduate students and professionals. Note: photos are of adjoining apartment. Whether you're in Chapel Hill to study or work, or experience it as a retirement community, the 200 block of McCauley Street is undoubtedly the best location! It's in the heart of the Cameron-McCauley Historic District, at the highest elevation in town. Convenient brick sidewalks facilitate an easy 5-10 minute walk to UNC's Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health, and Pharmacy. With an 8-12 minute walk one is on North Campus. Also with a short walk one can arrive at many of the other destinations that make this area so great. The Global Education Center is just a block away, and the Carolina Inn is across the street from it; Kenan Stadium and Memorial Hall are less than a 10-minute walk; and Playmakers, the Arboretum, and Battle Park just a bit further. Great local restaurants and bars are an easy 10- to 15-minute walk, as well as fine culinary spots such as Mediterranean Deli, Tom Robinson's Seafood, Cliff's Meat Market, and Weaver Street Market, where tasty provisions can be found. Notably, the new location of famed music club Cat's Cradle is a short 10-15 minute walk away! Whether it's getting to work/class on campus or in-town, or simply just going out and about in the heart of Chapel Hill, you've no traffic/parking hassles to worry about when living here! Location and charm -- does not get any better than this! Please note: the apartments are not rented to those needing to park large SUVs or other, similar large-sized vehicles, and parking of these in the driveway by both tenants and guests -- is prohibited. (Sorry! Usually there are parking spots on McCauley Street and Vance Street in the evening, and the Town graciously sells on-street parking permits at a bargain price.)
