In addition to the mansion house & approximately 9.31 acres, this property also includes 2 guest houses plus a stable. The mansion house is livable but in need of general restoration. The National Register of Historical places says Grand Oaks was constructed circa 1843 for William Holt & his wife Phoebe by Dabney Crosby, Jr. in 1917, it was bought to Hannah Vaughn, wife of Colonel Ira Vaughn who was overseeing the construction of the dam & power plant on the Banister River. Mrs. Vaughn did not enjoy living on Falkland Plantation, her husband's hunting lodge, & wanted an in town house for entertaining. The original house, a two story Greek Revival was brick laid in Flemish bond, with exterior chimneys at its gable ends. There was one room on each side of a central hall with the same arrangement on the second floor. Today the house has wings on each side & the roofline in front was extended for a 2 story portico supported by Tuscan columns w. a Colonial Revival faade. The original stairway w. hand carved elements still has a commanding presence & the entry door & window surrounds remain their original Greek Revival lintels.
