    What's special

Historic Home/ Artist Studio A true jewel of Taos, this historic adobe has Northern New Mexico charm with a Bauhaus twist. Thick walls make this home solid and quiet. The total square footage is approx. 2,750 square ft. The attached studio is 18 x 28 ft. with adjacent storage 11 x 20 ft. with many built-in shelves. 18 ft. ceilings, four skylights and Northern exposure provide the perfect light for painters and printmakers. The house was designed by the former owner Earl Stroh who was one of the renowned Taos Modernist painters. The lot is .875 acres and has 2.5-acre ft. of water rights to the acequia across the street. The house is heated by Natural Gas and hot water baseboard,The floors are mostly brick with cement in the studio and finished/stained cement in the master and wood in the second bedroom. There are five zones in the house, two boilers, and two hot water heaters. As you enter from the street there is a decorative privacy wall protecting the front door from wind and street noise and a garden with flowering Ivy. The front entrance has a slotted wooden screen and a Spanish style custom door. A versatile floor plan allows for a mother-in-law suite or provide rental income. The living room has brick floors (recycled from the fire at the Santa Fe Prison), skylights, built-in bookshelves, four French door style windows, and a central kiva fireplace. The fireplace has a stone hearth and is a curved adobe wall that truly throws the heat, behind it is an area I used as a guest bedroom and fits a queen size bed. The historic part of the house contains the dining room, kitchen, library and the sleeping quarters of the Master and is dated circa 1870. These rooms have high ceilings and hand adzed vigas. There is a woodstove in the corner of the dining room with marble tile behind it. A bar divides the dining room from the kitchen. There is a Gas stove, dishwasher, and fridge. The cabinets are deep and wide with a pantry at the far end and plenty of shelving. Between the two bedrooms is a well-lit library with skylights, brick tile, and built-in bookshelves. The home has two very large bedrooms; the Master has a sleeping area with a cove ceiling, dressing area with two large closets with built-in cabinets and a step down to a large attached bath. There is a closet here for a stackable washer and dryer. The bath has a Japanese tub 48 in. deep with seating for two and six jets. There is a stall shower and a WC for the toilet. The second bedroom is a converted garage, brightly lit with a door to the outside and a wood floor. Adjacent to the second bedroom is a large storage area that backs up to the master bath and plumbing. This would be a great location for an extra bath. The central courtyard is also brick with surrounding wooden portal and central opening offering views to the southern mountains and Picuris Peak. There is a fenced yard with an old growth ponderosa and other trees and perennials. The backfield has a surrounding privacy fence and could easily be used as a horse property with plenty of room for a barn. This is a beautiful and interesting home with a lot of history and a wonderful creative space. Quiet and private yet close to town.
