Designed by famous architect Donald McDonald, and hand-hewn, this iconic Bear Valley house is a replica of the Norwegian Vastveitloftet from the Vastveit farm in Telemark Norway circa the 14th century. The inspiration came from the exact house found in the Skansen Stockholm open-air Museum of Scandinavian Architecture. Finished in 2008 this home was milled on-site of gigantic, solid, old-growth redwood, including the roof. This house was designed and literally built to last 1000 years. Radiant heated. On-demand water heater. Custom pattern super strong metal entry railing system. Hand-painted rosemaling by Norwegian artisans. Hand-carved wood shutters and trim. One bedroom and full bathroom on the lower floor with a second full bathroom on the bottom floor. There are two hand-crafted sleeping nooks in the living room, true to the design of the 14th century, as well as a large loft for additional sleeping. The stair railings are all custom maple and are replicas from a church in Norway, constructed in 1650. Modern kitchen. Interior fire sprinkler system. Some of the best views in Bear Valley are to be had from this house which stares directly at the Dardanelles and Yosemite beyond, across the Sierra High Country. A replica of a 4,000 year old labyrinth graces the yard.
