Firstly let me state that Spirit wood is a unique place… built entirely by Claudia and myself over the course of 10 years… our heart and soul have gone into this place from the foundation up… Spiritwood is a fully sustainable off grid home. Some may think it remote and in that regard it is certainly peaceful, serene and quiet. Being 8 miles from Cotopaxi and 33 miles ( 45 minutes) from Salida.. remote is all in ones perception. The 4 miles of dirt road are very well maintained both in summer and winter. Roads are usually plowed early am after a snow storm. All this being said, it is our belief that Spiritwood will appeal only to those who love nature and are willing and able to enjoy the effort that comes with living in such a place. For example… we plow our driveway with a snow blower.. sometimes it takes 20 minutes.. sometimes over an hour…. Our driveway / garage is 80 yards from the house via a wooded path….we see this as a beautiful way to approach our home. FYI when the snow is gone one can drive up to the house if necessary. So.. it takes some effort to live here but to those of you who gravitate to this lifestyle, it is very rewarding. Located at 9,000 ft., Spiritwood looks across to the Sangre de Christo Mts with no impeding obstructions. Spruce Basin is a community of sorts consisting of approximately 200 acreages. I would estimate there are about 30 year round families with additional summer residents. Wildlife is abundant. Oddly enough the winters are not as tough as one might think. I would say that 90% of our snow comes in March and April. Spruce Basin is surrounded by BLM land. Spiritwood is fully south facing and the sun shines here well over 330 days a year. Though power is available, this has been the ideal location for off grid living and all our electric needs have been easily met with the occasional use of a back up propane generator. Our solar system has been completely upgraded in 2019 and consists of 6 290 watt panels with 12 solar batteries. A Schneider Context SW 4024 Inverter/Charger coupled with a Context MPPT 60 150 Charge controller. The only luxury we do not have is an electric hot tub. Fridge, stove, water heater and wall furnace are all propane. Propane costs have been approximately $1000 per year. Our main source of heat is sun and wood of which we use about 3 cords a year. Our well has been very reliable. We pump via a submersible DC pump up to a 600 gallon cistern and then use a DC pressure pump to the house. Dish TV is available as are land line phone service and AT&T cellular. We currently use ATT&T with internet TV. The main house is 1300 sq ft. with a crawl space underneath as well as , a mechanical room containing the cistern and pressure tank and hot water heater, a room with the solar equipment and a 12’ x 10’ storage space. Outbuildings include: 1. A 16’ x 12’ workshop with an upstairs insulated and heated 16’ x 14’ guest loft as well as an attached 8’ x 11’ storage unit plus a 14’ x 14’ greenhouse. 2. A 10’ x 8’ wood fired sauna. 3. A 26’ x 16’ garage. 4. A 160 sq ft “sport shed” with attached 17’ x 12’ garage.. ideal for small car, bikes 4 x 4 etc. 5. Covered wood shed 6. A 16’ x 12’ “Sky deck”….
