The Woolen Mills is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Charlottesville. Our home, Pireus Store, is individually listed on the National register of Historic Places. Pireus Store was constructed in 1826 by William Hunter Merriwether, a nephew of Merriwether Lewis, the famed explorer. Our home was first built and used as a tavern and general store to service the bateau traffic docking beneath the new dam on the Rivanna. it remains a very intact example of the vernacular architecture in the early 19th century. Home has solid brick walls 14" thick, exposed beaded beams on two floors, 3" thick and 12" wide all of heart pine. Flooring is original heart poine throughout original home with slate on tavern floor in basement. 2002 addition doubled size of home to 3,780 SF and was built using best materials available. Brick exterior, copper roofing, solid cherry flooring. We have just received approval to construct a two car carriage house and will build a 1,000 bottle wine cellar below. WE have declined offers on our house in excess of $ 1,000,000 as recently as last fall so please adjust your values accordingly. I purchased this home in 1990 and have owned it ever since.
