The opulent exterior provides a perfect contrast to the clean lines and contemporary loft-like interiors designed by DiGiuseppe Architect.
Organically connected to the world through a stunning lobby that pays homage to the area's historical visuals and natural ambiance, each residence incorporates every feature a discerning dweller's wish-list would entail. The Story Behind the Building
The story: Claudius Galenus, or Galen of Pergamon, was a prominent Greek physician, surgeon, and philosopher in the second-century Roman Empire. Alongside Hippocrates, he is considered one of the most important contributors to modern Western medicine. The use of the name "Galen" became quite popular during Victorian times, especially for naming sanatoria and medical retreat centers.
One of the most well-known of these in the New York City area was the Galen Hall in Atlantic City. So, when a twelve-floor office tower exclusively for doctors and medical professionals was proposed for Brooklyn, it was only fitting that it should be called Galen Hall, or the Galen Hall Office Building.
The building, designed in the Beaux-Arts style with a hint of Colonial Revival, was completed in 1911 and situated on a narrow 25-foot wide lot on Joralemon Street, right next to the Packer Institute. At the time, it was the tallest building on the block, towering over the four-story row houses around it.
Designed by architect George Keister in 1909, Galen Hall was part of a broader trend of buildings designed by Keister, who is also known for iconic structures like the Apollo Theater in Harlem and the Belasco's Stuyvesant Theater. Many of Keister's buildings have since become landmarks, including the Hotel Gerard and the Bertine Block of landmarked houses in the Bronx.
Upon completion, the Brooklyn Eagle reported that Galen Hall had already begun attracting doctors and medical professionals from surrounding buildings, further cementing its reputation as a landmark of its time.
This historic building is not only a testament to Keister's architectural talent but also a symbol of Brooklyn's rich past beautifully blending the old and the new.
