Poquoson is a small city of approximately 12,000 people located in Southeast Virginia beside Hampton near Langley Air Force Base. It has only 4 stop lights and 4 schools: Poquoson Primary, Poquoson Elementary, Poquoson Middle and Poquoson High. There are 2 grocery stores and 2 gas stations. Although its roots are sown deeply by the men who worked the waters of the Poquoson River and Back River fishing, clamming, oystering and crabbing, many who live here came when stationed at Langley AFB and some retired and stayed because they loved it. Poquoson is a city where "everyone knows everyone" for the most part, and when Hurricane Isabel devastated the area on September 18, 2003, so many came together and helped one another until we were all back on our feet. The name Poquoson is an Indian word meaning 'great marsh' and indeed, Poquoson is a low lying area of land where most people purchasing a home are required to buy flood insurance. For those who have lived here most or all their lives, flooding that occurs during northeasters is just an inconvenience and not a reason to live elsewhere. In fact, most people who move to Poquoson never leave but if they do, they almost always return.
