The first floor is compact and easy to heat and cool, featuring a fully applianced kitchen with ceramic tile floors, a living room and two bedrooms with recently refinished hardwood floors, and a recently newly bathroom with ceramic tile floor. The upstairs is a long, finished attic, with tons of space. It is carpeted and finished with knotty pine paneling. It features a lot of storage space in the eaves, including closets and cubbies and shelves. The basement is full sized, and a large investment was made to fully waterproof it, trenching around the entire foundation, installing a new sump pump, and bracing the basement walls with steel I-beams. (Most houses in this area have problems with the basement walls pushing in, because of the sandy soil and the water table in this area. It is about $10,000 to fix, and we have already done that.) It would be easy to finish the basement to add extra living space. Some metal wall partitions are already in place, and just need the drywall screwed on. We currently use the basement for laundry, storage, a workbench and a fitness center. There are several cabinets and countertops installed for tools and a working area, which could be converted to a craft or other work area for a home business. In 2006, all the windows were replaced with energy saving windows, the floors were refinished, and the kitchen was remodeled, adding a dishwasher and extra cabinets and countertops. There is a range and over with a built-in microwave over the top. Neighborhood Description This is a post-World War II neighborhood of stable, well-built, compact homes. Most of the homes in the neighborhood have the bedrooms on the first-floor, with a finished-attic second floor. St. James Catholic Church and School is at the end of the block, and lends a sense of stability and community to this neighborhood. There are several original residents on our block, and most people keep their yards looking nice. There are also several young families who take good care of their properties. There are some young children on the block. It is an older neighborhood, with affordable homes, so we have the occasional riff-raff passing through, but the neighbors usually band together and take the initiative to tell kids not to litter and that kind of thing. There is some shopping nearby at Northern Lights shopping center, although it is certainly not the nicest retail district in Columbus. But it is convenient and features a supermarket, two banks, a gas station, and many discount stores.
