Wilkes County offers a mix of housing that includes traditional communities, farmland and friendly neighborhoods. All areas have good access to schools, shopping, recreation, entertainment and healthcare.Wilkes County has a great history. Daniel Boone and his family made their home in Wilkes County for many years, leaving here to make their famous trip to Kentucky. It was the "mountain men" of Wilkes who arrived at the Battle of Kings Mountain and in doing so, turned the tide of the Revolutionary War. For over a century, people nationwide have been fascinated and intrigued with the Tom (Dula) Dooley story and romantic murder mystery. The death of Laura Foster was one of the nation's first highly publicized crimes of passion. Tom "Dooley", detained in the Old Wilkes Jail, hanged for the crime but many questions were left unanswered. One needs to explore the beautiful scenery and wonderful sites located in Wilkes. Two state parks, Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest and Stone Mountain State Park, are spread out along the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Recreation such as hiking, biking, and jogging are open to the public at the Yadkin River Greenway, and the fabulous nine-mile Dark Mountain Trail on the W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir property. W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is the only lake of this size in Northwestern North Carolina and offers wonderful fishing and water sport opportunities. If you love adventure, try canoeing or kayaking down the mighty Yadkin River or Roaring River.Golf, another recreation for visitors and locals, can be found at area public courses, and at private courses such as Oakwoods Country Club and Jefferson Landing Club. Good food and music can be found as well as the sites and sounds of the great outdoors during any visit. Enjoy vineyard tours and wine tastings at numerous vineyards and wineries throughout the area. Popular Wilkes County festivals include MerleFest in April, Shine to Wine in May, Singing In The Foothills in June, Carolina In The Fall in September, and Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in October.
