The Chastleton is a historic cooperative building located on the corner of 16th Street and R Street in Dupont Circle and is one of Washington DC's most prominent historic residential structures. Designed by architect Phillip M. Jullien, the Tudor and Gothic-Revival structure was built in 1920 on a one-acre site at 16th and R Streets NW, and is adorned with elaborate carved limestone and glazed terra-cotta details. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was known as the largest Gothic Revival apartment building in Washington. The striking Gothic motif continues inside, where the two-story main entrance lobby, lounge, ballroom and public spaces feature flagstone floors and pilasters with floral capitals. The balcony railings showcase ornate ironwork and the richly detailed plaster work ceilings were highly intricate and appropriately elaborate.Over the years, it was home to General Douglas McArthur, Wallis Simpson, who later became the Duchess of Windsor, and an assortment of Members of Congress and local business persons.Renovated in 2007, the 8-story building offers 300 residences. The monthly fees include cable TV, CAM, lawn maintenance, management, reserve funds, security, sewer, snow removal, taxes, trash removal, water, exercise room and underlying mortgage.
