Since its renovation in 2018, the Flat Top cabin is currently a well-reviewed vacation rental, and is set up for that purpose and accommodates up to eight people comfortably. The hill where the family built the weekend cabin is affectionately named "Flat Top" because it was initially identified on the geodetic survey map as such—an official marker on the hilltop dated 1939 by Norman Glover, a licensed surveyor. In 1963 the family contacted the US Forestry Service and planted around 500 trees on the sparsely tree-studded property. The trees were provided by the Forestry Service free of charge and included Jeffrey Pines, Arizona Cypress, and Incense Cedar. These beautiful trees have grown to maturity, and present a beautiful canopy of shaded areas and tree-lined panoramic views that stretch across Volcan Mountain to southwestern skies. The family made many special memories by planting these gifted trees together. The comments from guests at the cabin include "peaceful and quiet, and secluded," which is an experience you will find at Julian Flat Top cabin. The cabin is within walking distance, about one mile and a half from the historic gold mining town of Julian, CA., and many local attractions, hiking trails, wineries, the wolf sanctuary, and more. It is about one mile to the beautiful Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve.
