    There is a charming house built in the late 1920’s on Homestead Road situated on 1.41 acres overlooking a pond. The house was originally part of the Duncan farm, 150 acres hugging both sides of Homestead Road which at the time was just a dirt road. The Duncan family grew tobacco, vegetables, strawberries, apples and raised cows, pigs and chickens. The pond was stocked with fish which supplemented the family’s diet nicely, according to Marie Duncan, the wife of Venable Duncan, the next to oldest of the Duncan family’s ten children. Venable left home in the mid-1930’s. Before flying the coop, Venable attended school at a one-room school house, McDuffie Church and one year in Carrboro where he met Marie. He left school in the seventh grade and began working local farms with horses. He married Marie, and they built a house adjacent to the original Duncan farm house.
