A little background on 161 Union Street home , formally known as the Historic E. Nickerson Residence: In 1905 local entrepreneur, Mr. Edwin Nickerson commissioned notable local Architect Mr. Joseph H. Christopher to create a unique custom home of the Queen Anne Victorian style. Mr. Joseph Christopher was Born Sept. 17th, 1863. By perseverance and reputation, Mr. Joseph Christopher became a well-known local architect of the time designing many handsome homes of historic significance. He was a member of the Ridgewood fire company where he first met Mr. Edwin Nickerson, which eventually lead to his commission to design this majestic Queen Anne Victorian home. The proud owner, Mr. Edward Nickerson was born April 20th 1859. He was a direct descendant of William and Anna Nickerson who settled into America in June 20th, 1637. Mr. Edward Nickerson chose to raise his family in Ridgewood, NJ in 1885 where he engaged in a lumber company with I.E. Hutton, and later became the president of Nickerson-Hopper Lumber Company in Ridgewood. His lumber company was the primary contributor for framing materials for all the homes and historic commercial buildings which contributed to the development of downtown Ridgewood Ave and Broad Street historic district. While in Ridgewood, Mr. Nickerson was also an active member of the school board for Ridgewood s first small schoolhouse conveniently located directly across the street from this residence. The school house has since been restored and converted into apartments, and is appropriately named The School House Apartments . He was also a township officer and a volunteer fire fighter along side of Mr. Joseph Christopher, who created this lovely Victorian home. Mr Nickerson and his wife Anne Westervelt raised their two sons at this home until his retirement in 1918, at which time he decided to spend his quiet years operating a small farm in Middletown NJ. One hundred years later, in 2018 , the home was acquired by notable local architect, Mr. Jordan Rosenberg, who spent two years painstakingly restoring the dilapidated home. Upon his acquisition of this home, it apparently had incurred fire damage and total neglect. With a passion for historic restoration, Mr. Rosenberg rejuvenated and restored the entire home, and brought new life to even the smallest of details, with the purpose of making it his retirement home for him and his family one day. The inspiration for the restoration of this Queen Anne Victorian was undoubtedly the Queen of Hearts; thus the custom porch spindles have all the suits in a deck of cards represented- spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts hidden in each individual porch spindle which was custom designed and fabricated by Jordan to be unique and original in every detail. It is the hope and dreams of Jordan Rosenberg that this home will bring happiness and beautiful memories to many more generations of his family, and those lucky few that have the privilege of living there in the interim. tenant pays gas/elec. portion of lawn maintenence, and cable/tele.
