The block is actively friendly, with block parties and general neighborliness abounding. For example just this week we've been watching one neighbor's cats for them while they're away (they do the same for us), and another neighbor has some things in our freezer because hers is on the fritz. There are families with kids and also older folks on the block. There are people who grew up there and people who have just moved in. It's an awesome block. Neighborhood-wise it is walking distance to all of Berkeley, all of the local schools, plenty of cafes and restaurants, downtown Berkeley, 3 BART stations, etc. Also it's right off California Street, which has a bike lane, and you can ride up or down California and get to pretty much anywhere. Park-wise the best thing it's close to is the Ohlone Greenway, though there are some smaller things closer by. It's also near San Pablo park in the other direction. Truly it's a terrific neighborhood in pretty much every way!
