When finally completed in 1981, it remains vacant for years and is nicknamed "the dog house" for the ground floor watchdogs. Building is now called Mountain Bay Plaza. 1975 - Old Mill Mall opens. The center features a multiplex movie theater and an indoor atrium with the center's namesake, a unique wooden mill wheel. The center is demolished in 1994 to become a housing development. 1983 - Shoreline Park and Golf Course opens. Landfill for the 700-acre park is created from San Francisco garbage. The amphitheatre completed in 1986, accommodates over 20,000 people and boasts one of the world's largest tent structures. 1985 - Pacific Press operating since 1904, citing increased business costs, moves to Idaho. 1988 - City begins its $11.5 million seven-block renovation project of Castro Street (completed in 1990). 1989 - Loma Prieta earthquake causes more than $6 million in damage to public and private property but there are no deaths or major fires. 1991- Moffett Naval Air Station closes. $44.5 million City Civic Center and Center of Performing Arts is complete 1995 Netscape Communications, an Internet service provider best known for its browser, is founded. 1997 - New public library located on Franklin Street opens. 1998 -Arson fire destroys St. James Infirmary, a popular bar and grill that opened in 1967. It is known for its kitchy decor, notably a 30-foot-statue of Wonder Woman. 1999 - Opening of the Tasman West light-rail project, which extends trains from Santa Clara to downtown Mountain View. 2002- Established in California in 1996, the Computer History Museum whose mission is the preservation of computing history, moves to Mountain View. 2006- Google (which moved to Mountain View in 1999) buys its Mountain View headquarters and the 500,000-square-foot Legacy Shoreline Center nearby for $319 million.
