History of 127 Main Street
"Overlook House" in Sandwich Village has been a showplace Victorian Queen Anne home since it was built in 1880 by English glassmaker Edward J. Swann. Successive owners were, Henry Francis Spurr, who like Swann, worked with the Boston and Sandwich Glass Factory, and Henry Alden Belcher, a Boston department store owner. The main rooms retain their authentic refined classic art craftsmanship.
Stonework by Frederic Olmstead edges the home's spindle work-trimmed porte-cochere, a column-lined mahogany veranda and an elliptical porch. A copper garden muse doorknocker enlivens the paneled front door, which is flanked by glass sidelights.
The living room has Corinthian fluted columns and pilasters, 14-inch-wide cornices with four molding styles, acanthus leaf modillions, a wall fresco and a quarter sawn oak floor. The living room’s fireplace, with floral tile trim and a cast iron fire back with gridded fleur-de-lis detail, is flanked on each side by an inglenook and cream paneled walls.
From the foyer, French doors with bubble-glass doorknobs open to a sitting room with yellow ocher plaster walls, quarter sawn oak wainscoting and a Greek key cornice molding. Paneled pocket doors of solid oak lead to a bay-windowed dining room, with a fire placed dining room of buff flint brick and a mahogany Victorian overmantel.
The elegant main staircase has rope, spiral and corkscrew balusters, and carved wood acanthus leaves trim the stringers. The second floor has a wide hall with oak parquet flooring leading to a solarium, an office, an exercise room (both of which could be bedrooms) a large master suite with walk-in closet, second sink area and tub. A private, large second master suite with French doors, walk-in closet, double-vanity, walk-in tiled shower and tranquil cedar sauna top off this gem. Large closets are plentiful and high ceilings throughout enhance this gorgeous home.
A large sun-lit room with closet and bathroom is located on the first floor at the rear of the home and currently has a separate entrance making this space a perfect in-law suite or rental opportunity.
The third floor rooms can be accessed from the main staircase as well as by a private-entranced, rear staircase.
High ceilings throughout and the third floor widow’s walk glorify this home’s history.
