Even on the coldest days of winter I was forever a gazer of the natural world. Once an adult, I sought the same: to not just look at the landscape, but to be embedded in it. The child merged with the adult when my husband and I discovered overgrown land abutting the salt marsh of Joshua Cove, just a mile from the center of Guilford. Through the thick forest, invaded with bramble and undergrowth, we could imagine the contours of the property falling gently to this basin of water and grasses, and then beyond to the Connecticut Sound. At the time these were not even visible. It became ours and a project to fulfill our vision began. It continued for the next several years. We did not build right away. Instead we homesteaded our purchased 5 acres over several years, clearing bit by bit. It spoke to us and we spoke back. Within our discourse, a landscape emerged that was breathtaking. So much so, we questioned if a house would intrude. We found gifted young architects and designers who understood this. This was not to be a house that would be an interruption, but rather a dwelling that would nestle respectfully within this created landscape of ours. Its profile is low like the horizon; it bends slightly to yield to the terrain. It merges with what nature has created like so many of todays homes do not. It respects its surroundings. A full view of the marsh through the house from the driveway is your salutation; the all glass southern wall is your transformation of being outside from within. If you have observed a marsh you might have noted its beauty. But you cant truly know it unless you witness it over hours, days and years. Since living here for a decade, I have come to appreciate the companionship of an ever changing view: the allure that every glance is a new reveal. I continue to take photographs, insanely thinking I can capture the beautiful and fleeting behavior of a salt marsh. I am never done because it is not...
