In 1774, famous botanist William Bartram, visited Bear Island which he noted in his journal. Many people today follow what is known as Bartram's Trail. In 1942, an Airstrip was constructed on the island to practice aircraft carrier landings. Columbia Pictures held the premier of Jules Verne's ''Mysterious Island'' on Bear Island.
