He who loves an old house, never loves in vain. This New England influenced, Colonial Revival, began its life in the 1840's as what is assumed was a two story, four-square, fisherman's house overlooking front harbour south to Quaker Island. Purchased by Chester's first lady of real estate in 1910, during the glory days of the Hackmatack Inn, its unassuming presence underwent numerous renovations, gradually transformed into a jewel-box, white-washed, 'wedding cake', with widow's walks and observatory, The Woodbox opened its doors to overnight guests, across from Mrs. Hallock's seaside tearoom off Water Lane, from its reincarnation through to the 1920's. If a short list could be imagined of Chester's five most unique homes, certainly, this romantic, Regency cottage would grace that list. The main floor offers a large open concept living-dining space forming an L with a galley kitchen with a small breakfast nook at its far end. There is a main floor powder room and off the living-room a tidy study through French doors. Through its windows, the main floor L offers glimpses of the water passing over the historic streetscape. The 2nd floor has three bedrooms and central family bath - all the bedrooms having ocean views. A winding stairway arrives at a 3rd floor loft with one of the most captivating front harbour views in the village. The property is a few steps from the seaside memorial to Admiral Piers, who spent his honeymoon in this house, and is a short walk to the Yacht Club and The Chester Playhouse. Preserving its historic shell, and returning the home to its original appearance of 1920, The Woodbox is one of the most thoughtful and carefully executed renovations in Chester. All of the shingle siding, trim, railings and multi paned windows have been restored. The beach-stone chimney has been preserved. From the outside, there is very little a 1920's time-traveller would not find familiar in a home that makes one pause to reflect on an evening stroll. 2020-11-30
